“After watching Hugo’s performance in theaters, I invited him to participate in my project. Hugo was photographed amidst debris and construction equipment in what has now become Estudio NU, a space for artists to express themselves, transform ideas and break concepts and prejudices. The mission of any artist is to provoke. Hugo, amidst this whirlwind of dust and raw materials, represents not only the construction of this new space, but also the purpose of the Real Men project. For his project, Chris photographs men in actions pertaining to their real lives, their work, or an activity they might be currently performing. In my case, I had been renovating this old apartment into my future studio, so we took this chance to shoot using the “construction work” theme. The colorful edit and the cellophane heads are his trademark, and here they are, boosting the flare from that surprisingly scorching winter sun.
“[…] The end result of every construction work, the arduous process of destruction and rebuilding, is the reward that comes in the beauty of a new image, a new reality built by and for ourselves.” — Chris, The Red
“Real Men is a photographic project I started in 2016 to portray the beauty of the male body in all its forms. We are not a single aesthetic standard, the standard that magazines and industries try to put as ideal. Our beauty goes beyond. The real man is short, tall, thin, fat, smooth, hairy, cis, trans, gay, straight, black, white, etc. But not just that. The real man is not necessarily a masculine and masculinized image. The real men seek to break with the aesthetic and cultural standards, break the macho culture that plagues our society by increasing violence against the minorities who suffer the result of the patriarchal way men are raised and educated. The project is open to all men who want to participate.”

What do you think of these images? I’m fond of how different they look from the previous shoots, even though they were made in the same place as shoots 22 and 23.
