It was even before launching 100 NUDE Shoots that I was enchanted by Rony Hernandes‘ work with his project “Florescer” (“Blossoming”), and asked him to collaborate. Rony is very young but has a centuries-old sensitivity — and not unlike me, he explores in his work the intersections of visual, body and performative arts.
With the word and images, Rony Hernandes:
“Project ‘Blossoming’ portrays through nudity what I call the flowering process of people, an act that varies for each person. There are people who believe that they have bloomed after a trauma, a great difficulty, and others due to decisions or choices, to do good, to move, change… The only fixed idea of my work is to demonstrate the feelings of each person, noting that the act of being photographed, especially nude, is in itself a means of blossoming.
Hugo’s flourishing happened when he decided, on his thirties, to abandon his corporate career to devote himself fully to an impulse of artistic achievement…
… When Hugo told me his story I started to ponder about when, where and how we would make his photoshoot. I quite like to portray people in their homes because of the familiarity and comfort it affords, but I also strive to innovate, and this shoot called for something different…
… We photographed then at sunrise, not only due to the incredible light that the dawn gives us, but for symbolizing a new beginning. And we did it in the heights, on the terrace of the building where he lives, to show this ‘going above and beyond’ taxed as deviant, transgressor by society…
… For each shoot I create a name that synthesizes the participant’s blossoming process. I love playing with words that allow for various interpretations and meanings, just like I try to do with my photographs.
This one was named uNUsual…
unusual – not customary; which is opposed to uses and customs; contrary to rules, to tradition.
NU(de) – dispenses definition…
… The top of the building resembled a stage, with lights from the windows still lit from the night before resembling the lit up mobiles in the hands of the audience; and in the background a great floodlight: the sun rising and illuminating another of Hugo’s performances, another photoshoot of ‘Blossoming’.” — Rony Hernandes
“Blossoming, in my view, to us who are not-flower-humans, is a stage in the process of self-awareness. It is when, in the face of our repressed desires, we open space for them to grow and begin to overflow, to transcend, to guide our direction, our actions and our relationships. It’s a no-return process. I have lived this experience since I left the course that I had gone through in my life without being conscious of it, and began to dedicate myself almost entirely to my own personal and artistic goals and projects. For this I have faced and face opposing forces, external and internal constraints that would rather keep everything stagnant, to prevent the challenge to the outside world that is to thrive in ourselves.” — Hugo Faz
the urban rooftop is a stage
the horizon attentive audience
a blooming Sun silently reclaims
from the city windows still lit
— the São Paulo night reverberates, insists
it’s still early to turn down
the privilege of lighting me up
