Alejandro Zenha is an architect, and being a photographer who emerged from the visual arts, he discovered his true artistic vein behind the lens of an objective. We shot at the estúdio NU during its final renovation works, and Alejandro made a collage with street photographs he made of São Paulo.
The resulting series of images he called “THE INHABITANT“.
With the word, the artist:
“Before working with Hugo, I had the opportunity to see him on stage in the theater. Throughout the play he is naked, dressed only by the stage, the text, the light and the atmosphere that only Art is able to provide, precisely because along with Art necessarily comes the context — and the nude figure ceases to be body and performance and becomes manifest. […]
[…] Manifesting oneself through nudity is, before so many aspects, an exercise of truth. That is why the nude startles and enraptures. It is shocking to evade the rules, to swim against the tide, to shout in the midst of silence. And it’s overwhelming precisely for the same reasons. […]
[…] Vanity and power are the co-authors of the exercise of truth, and this is where Hugo’s proposal subverts once more: he is just an interpreter, the final work no longer concerns his body or his nakedness — it is a concession — and not always consented, because the final result no longer belongs to him. 100 NUDE Shoots is, yes, an exercise in surrender and detachment. […]
[…] It was in following the proposal of nudity diluted by the context surrounding it, that the photoshoot “THE INHABITANT” was conceived — a man swallowed up by his habitat, devoured by the universe he himself created. Body and City in an anthropophagic patchwork.”
— Alejandro Zenha
“The naked body is pornographic. Other people’s sex is a nuisance. Genitals are an offense. Good skin is covered skin. Physical pleasure is to be had away from sight. Nipples are controversial… The alternative is real life.“ — Alejandro Zenha
We’d love to know your impressions of “THE INHABITANT“, so please write us about it!
